RISING CRIME IN SUBWAYS CONFIRMS WEINER REPORT
New York City – Last week, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) released new data showing that crime is up on the subways.
The Mayor said that wasn’t true.
"I would take the word of [Police] Commissioner Kelly and the FBI before taking the word of Anthony Weiner," Bloomberg's spokesman Bill Cunningham said. "Is he saying the FBI is unable to add or subtract?" [NY Post, 6/26/05]
But today’s New York Daily News reports that robberies are up 17%, grand larceny is up, rape is up, and even murder is up.
The source? The NYPD.
“Election year politics shouldn’t get in the way of fixing our subways,” said Rep. Weiner. “But the Mayor seems more intent on saying ‘everything is fine’ than in getting to work on what ails our transit system. That passive approach is leaving too many straphangers stranded. As Mayor, I’ll take back control of our subways.”
Weiner has proposed an eight point plan to save our subways.
The plan includes bringing emergency cell phone service to the subways, and putting more transit cops on the beat.
