WEINER RENEWS CALL TO
MAKE SCHOOL FUNDING MORE TRANSPARENT
According to news reports today, the Bloomberg Administration is giving up efforts to make sure schools are more equitably funded. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) released the following statement:
“If a parent, a teacher, a public official, a member of the media or any other stakeholder in our education system wants to find out how much money we are spending in a particular school it is extraordinarily difficult to do.
“A parent should be able to go on the Internet and look up how much is being spent on computers or personnel and how much is being spent on the experimental programs that this Mayor is so fond of.
“We need a funding system that lets schools respond in a smart way to the challenges they face, which can be very, very different from one district to another.
“Bringing transparency to school funding is the way to do it, not the cookie cutter approach to our schools has been the fundamental folly of the Bloomberg – Klein Administration.”
In a speech delivered in February, Weiner proposed opening up the City’s education finances by making all education funding information publicly available on the Internet.
