WEINER TO MIKE: “FIGHT FOR QUEENS"
New York City – According to published reports, the Jets are now considering just extending their lease at Giants Stadium, rather than moving to New York City. The news comes on the heels of the Public Authorities Control Board decision to delay a vote on the West Side stadium deal. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) released the following statement:
“The single biggest obstacle to the Olympics coming to New York City is the Mayor’s single minded obsession on the West Side Stadium.
“Now it’s driving the Jets back to Jersey too.
“If the Jets are shopping for other options, the Mayor can’t just sit back, he’s got to do something. Passive Mike won’t cut it.
“We can still save the Olympics bid and bring the Jets back home if the Mayor relents and does the right thing: fight for Queens. Build the stadium in Willets Point.”
Yesterday, the Public Authorities Control Board delayed consideration of the Mayor’s West Side stadium plan. To move forward, the stadium needs the support of the board’s three voting members—one appointed by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, one by Senate Majority Leaders Joe Bruno, and one by Governor Pataki.
According to Mayor Bloomberg, if a stadium isn’t approved prior to the Olympic site selection date on July 6, New York City has no chance.
Weiner first called for the new Jets stadium to be built in Queens over a year ago, in April 2004.
