CALL WEINER “BEST CANDIDATE TO TAKE ON BLOOMBERG”

New York City Today, the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) announced its support for Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) in the race for New York City Mayor. The RWDSU represents 45,000 members in New York City.

In making the announcement, RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum cited Weiner’s leadership in keeping Wal-Mart out of New York City, his advocacy on behalf of Duane Reade workers fighting for better benefits and wages, and his record on labor issues in Congress and the City Council.

“Members of the RWDSU have seen firsthand Anthony Weiner’s deeply held commitment to making this city a better place for all working people. We know that no one will fight harder for the working men and women of New York City than Anthony Weiner,” said Appelbaum.

“During his years in public office Anthony has stood up and fought for workers’ rights with conviction. He is a proven fighter and a proven winner, and that is why we are endorsing him.”

“His record, his vision for New York City, make him the best candidate to take on Mayor Bloomberg. We need a Democrat in City Hall and Anthony is the candidate to do it.”

Weiner said: “No one has demonstrated more resolve in the fight for fairness, dignity, and opportunity in the American workplace than Stuart Appelbaum. I am honored by his support and I am honored by the support of the 45,000 men and women of the RWDSU. These are the people I am fighting for in this campaign and will fight for in City Hall. I come from where they come from. I look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with Stuart Appelbaum and the men and women of RWDSU as we take back City Hall for New York City’s working people.”

Anthony Weiner has been a leader on labor issues throughout his career in public service.

He led the successful fight to keep Wal-Mart out of Rego Park, Queens. He has stood with RWDSU in the struggle to reach a fair contract for Duane Reade workers. In Congress, he’s fought for higher wages and the right to organize, worked to keep high quality, good paying jobs in the United States and to protect employee pensions. In 2004, he received a 100% rating from the AFL-CIO.
