WEINER RELEASES SECOND BOOK OF IDEAS FOR NEW YORK CITY

44 MORE REAL SOLUTIONS FOR HARDWORKING NEW YORKERS

DETAILED PLANS:
TAX CUT FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS,
SEX OFFENDER FREE ZONES NEAR OUR SCHOOLS,
HYBRIDS IN CITY’S TAXI FLEET

New York City – Today, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) released the second volume in his series of books detailing his vision for bettering the lives of middle class New Yorkers and those aspiring to get there.

In February, Weiner released the first volume in his series, called Real Solutions, which outlined his plans to improve our schools, spread economic development to all five boroughs, modernize our transportation network, relieve bureaucratic burdens on small businesses, help the less fortunate, make health care and housing affordable and accessible, keep our streets safe from crime and terror, and fight Albany for our fair share.

In the second volume of Real Solutions released today, Weiner provides a detailed look at a wide range of new proposals for improving the lives of working families throughout the five boroughs, including relieving the tax burden on the middle class, making our subways safer, expanding access to affordable health care, and taking back control over the City’s destiny from Albany.

MORE REAL SOLUTIONS FOR HARDWORKING NEW YORKERS:

10% Income Tax Cut for New Yorkers Making Less Than $150,000 A Year – As Mayor, Weiner will provide the middle class with real tax relief.  He’ll do it by cutting income taxes for every resident of the five boroughs making less than $150,000 a year.  He’ll pay for it by creating a new tax bracket for millionaires and cutting or reprogramming the bottom 5% worst performing programs in City government every year.

Keeping New Yorkers Safe and Secure – Anthony Weiner has pledged as Mayor to hire 3,000 police officers.  But his plans to keep New Yorkers safe involve much more than that. As Mayor, Weiner will fight to require any convicted felon to submit a DNA sample to the state’s database, refocus on gangs, graffiti and hate crimes, make police and firefighter radios interoperable, and fight to give law enforcement the power to civilly confine dangerous sex offenders who have completed their sentences and establish “Sex Offender Free Zones” near our schools and other places children gather.

A New Commitment to New York’s Environment – Anthony Weiner’s commitment to the environment begins with the hybrid car he drives, but that’s only the beginning.  As Mayor, Weiner will increase the number of hybrids in the City’s taxi fleet, clean up Newtown Creek, eradicate the Asian Longhorned Beetle, and save the Jamaica Bay wetlands.

Safer Subways – As Mayor, Weiner will harden subway security to make it safer for every straphanger. He’ll start by wiring every underground subway platform for emergency 9-1-1 cell phone service. And he’ll upgrade station trash cans to make them bomb resistant, and put at least two digital cameras in every station, with more in larger stations like Times Square and Atlantic Avenue.

Wiring New York City – As Mayor, Weiner will make sure the City stays at the cutting edge of technologies to improve the lives of average New Yorkers.  He’ll develop a citywide Wi-Fi network to give anyone with a properly equipped computer access to the Internet.  He’ll establish an online business “masterform” to consolidate the dizzying array of forms and applications anyone must fill out when starting a new business.  And to make commutes easier, Weiner will establish a real-time email and text messaging service from the Department of Transportation to provide updates on traffic snarls and delays.

Expanding Quality Health Care Coverage – Mayor Bloomberg says the poor get better health care in New York than the wealthy.  But Anthony Weiner knows better.  As Mayor, he’ll couple health care coverage for uninsured kids to the school lunch program, expand the number of seniors enrolled in subsidized prescription drug programs like EPIC, link Medicaid recipients with primary care providers so they get better care without running up expensive emergency room bills, use dollars won in Medicaid fraud enforcement actions to keep hospitals open in poor and minority neighborhoods while building connections between hospitals and churches to encourage preventative care, and he’ll refocus on HIV/AIDS.

Save Catholic Schools and Protect Yeshivas – Anthony Weiner detailed his plans to help our public schools in Real Solutions I, but his commitment to our school children doesn’t stop at the public school gate.  As Mayor, he’ll direct the Department of Education to help parochial schools find the resources to stay afloat.  And he’ll continue the work he began in Congress, where he secured $6 million to protect yeshivas and synagogues.  He’ll keep fighting for those funds.

New York City Bill of Rights, Part II – In Real Solutions I, Weiner detailed his New York City Bill of Rights, including giving the City permanent control over its schools and the subways.  As Mayor, he won’t stop there. Weiner will fight for City control over rent regulations, tax policy, the minimum wage, the awarding of liquor licenses and the rebuilding of Ground Zero.  And he’ll fight for the authority to marry gay couples, and to make Albany pay its fair share of taxes on City owned property.

Sunlight at City Hall – The current administration has brought a top down approach to governance with too much of the public’s business conducted behind closed doors. As Mayor, Weiner will open shine sunlight on City Hall dealings by banning campaign consultants from lobbying the elected officials and eliminate “pay for play” in public-private partnerships like NYC 2012 by banning contributions from individuals who do business with the City.  To avoid a repeat of the West Side Stadium debacle, Weiner will require that all major property sold to private developers be put up to open bid.  And Weiner will subject all significant public contracts to public review.

Renewing Governors Island – New York has had control over the development of Governors Island since 2003, but little has happened. As Mayor, Weiner will develop a plan within the first 100 days of his administration to create space on Governors Island for special events, concerts and festivals, art exhibits and educational offerings, a think tank, conference center, biotech campus, DNA lab, and world class hotel.

“My campaign is about providing real solutions to real New Yorkers,” said Rep. Weiner.  “The middle class and those aspiring to get there deserve real tax relief, safer subways, and a city that is on the cutting edge of high tech.  That’s what I’ll bring to New York City as Mayor.”
