Weiner Touts Boot Camp for Schoolhouse Bullies
BY MICHAEL SAUL AND CELESTE KATZ
WHEN IT COMES to misbehaving students in public schools, Rep. Anthony Weiner wants to take a page from the Army playbook.
Weiner said yesterday if he's elected mayor he'd establish "boot camp charter schools" for the city's toughest cases.
Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens) said the schools would combine the three R's with military academy-style discipline for disruptive, dangerous kids. "Too many hardworking New York families who used to see the schools as their pathway to middle class success in this city are increasingly seeing them as places that at a very fundamental level are unsafe for their children," Weiner said.
Meanwhile, Democratic frontrunner Fernando Ferrer won the endorsement of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, a union that includes Ferrer's wife, Aramina, a school principal, among its 10,000-plus members. "Freddy understands that education is not just teachers in a classroom," said Council President Jill Levy.
