WEINER TO BLOOMBERG:

SAVE THE OLYMPICS

____________

IF WEST SIDE STADIUM VOTE IS GOING TO BE DELAYED…

PUT QUEENS BACK ON THE TABLE

New York
City – Renewing his call that he first made in April of 2004, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) today implored Mayor Bloomberg to save New York City’s Olympics bid and drop his West Side stadium plan in favor of building in Willets Point, Queens.

Tomorrow, the Public Authorities Control Board is slated to consider the Mayor’s West Side stadium plan.  To move forward, the stadium needs the support of the board’s three voting members—one appointed by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, one by Senate Majority Leaders Joe Bruno, and one by Governor Pataki.

Silver wants to delay the vote.

According to Mayor Bloomberg, if a stadium isn’t approved prior to the Olympic site selection date on July 6, New York City has no chance.

Today, Weiner urged Bloomberg to drop his insistence on building on the West Side in favor of the much less controversial proposal of building in Queens.

“It’s become clear that the single biggest impediment to New York City’s Olympics bid is the Mayor’s singled minded obsession with building on the West Side,” said Rep. Weiner.  “It’s not too late to save the bid, and we can do it by putting Queens back on the table.”

Weiner was the first to call for building the new Jets stadium in Queens, and has released two reports questioning the wisdom of the West Side stadium deal.

In February of he sent a letter to the Mayor, urging him to fold the Willets Point location into the Olympic bid.
