Lessons Learned From Stadium Fight
Anthony says:
“The death of the West Side stadium deal is a turning point for New York City development, and an opportunity to assess next steps. There are real lessons to be learned, but it will take real leadership to apply them as we move forward on development priorities throughout the city.
“First, when the city auctions off its assets, it must do so through an open and transparent process that guarantees the city the highest return on its investment, and real accountability for the deal. No more sweetheart deals.
“Second, we should expand the Javits Center to accommodate more and larger conventions in New York City, and drive up badly needed revenue for our hotels and restaurants.
“Third, we should pivot immediately to the consensus stadium site and build in Willets Point, Queens. We can still win the Olympics bid and land the Jets in their real home, but only through nimble leadership that moves decisively.
“But maybe the most important lesson is this: no matter how much mayoral arm twisting or millions of dollars of special interest advertising is behind it a bad idea just won’t fly in New York City.
“That’s good news for New Yorkers in all five boroughs.”
