URGES NFL TO LOOSEN
WEST SIDE CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENT OF SUPER BOWL DEAL
New York City – Today, the National Football League’s (NFL) Super Bowl Advisory Committee is expected to present a resolution to team owners that would send the Super Bowl to New York City in 2010.
It’s great news, but there’s a catch: the resolution reportedly makes the award of the Super Bowl to New York City contingent on the construction of the West Side stadium.
This morning, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) responded by sending a letter to every member of the advisory committee, urging them to strike the language requiring the stadium to be built on the West Side.
Weiner advocates construction of the stadium in Queens.
“If the NFL has New York City football fans’ best interest at heart, it should refrain from injecting itself into a debate that has substantial implications for all New York taxpayers,” said Rep. Weiner. “We want the Super Bowl, but a West Side Stadium would be too steep a price to pay.”
Weiner first announced his opposition to the West Side stadium deal last April, and has released two reports questioning the wisdom of the West Side stadium deal. He proposes adopting the planned expansion of the Jacob Javits Convention Center to accommodate world class conventions, but return the Jets to their rightful home by exploring the siting of the new stadium in Willets Point, Queens.
